The City of Brandon has declared a state of local emergency as it prepares for anticipated flood conditions driven by heavy rainfall across the Assiniboine and Shellmouth River basins.
Provincial flood forecasts indicate Assiniboine River water levels will begin rising in the coming days, with peak flows expected around July 12. The declaration gives the city additional authority and flexibility to respond quickly, protect critical infrastructure and ensure public safety.
Flood protection measures already completed include a temporary dike closure at Grand Valley Road and 18th Street.
“This declaration allows us to take the necessary actions to protect our community as we prepare for the forecasted rise in river levels,” said Mayor Jeff Fawcett.
“While there are currently no evacuation orders in place, we are taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of residents and to maintain essential municipal services.”
The public is being asked to stay away from the dike system and all closed trails, parks, pathways, and riverbank areas.
Flood mitigation efforts remain underway, including enhanced river monitoring, protection of municipal infrastructure and deployment of flood response resources.
