A three-storey apartment building on Furby Street was evacuated early Thursday after a fire broke out, sending eight people to hospital.

Winnipeg firefighters responded just after 3 a.m. to find heavy smoke coming from the building.

Crews helped some residents evacuate while others got out on their own. The fire was declared under control at 4:20 a.m.

Two Winnipeg Transit buses were brought in to offer temporary shelter for some residents while further arrangements were made.

The fire remains under investigation.
