Manitoba has launched a new one-time flood recovery program for residents hit hardest by weeks of severe rainfall and flooding.
Storm systems brought over 200 millimetres of rain to western Manitoba and Parkland areas between June 6 and July 1, causing extensive flooding and damage to homes, farms, businesses and infrastructure.
The new program, announced on Friday, is separate from the existing disaster financial assistance program.
The Canadian Red Cross will be on-site in Swan River and Swan Valley West next week to help residents with insurance and financial assistance applications. The province will match Red Cross donations dollar for dollar up to $15 million.
As of Friday, 101 households representing roughly 250 people under mandatory evacuation orders have applied for emergency social services assistance.
The new program offers a one-time grant for homeowners and tenants in the hardest-hit communities, including those without sufficient insurance coverage. Eligible areas include Swan River, Swan Valley West, Roblin, Duck Mountain, Minitonas-Bowsman, the Municipality of Mountain and Camperville in the west, and Stonewall, Rosser, Rockwood, Woodlands, St. François Xavier, Teulon, Winnipeg Beach, Dunnottar and St. Andrews in the Interlake and Eastern region.
Approximately 1,800 applications have been made to the DFA program.
Winnipeg homeowners also have access to DFA supports and a rebate program for backwater valves.
