The Manitoba government is implementing several safety measures at Sturgeon Falls Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park following the drownings of two children earlier this month.
“As a father myself, my heart goes out to the family of the two boys who tragically lost their lives, and also to the families who have lost a loved one to drowning at this site,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes, in a release.
Planned upgrades include installing fencing to prevent access to slippery rock areas with a high risk of accidents, updating signage first developed in August 2023 to warn of hidden rocks, strong currents and steep drop-offs, and building fenced viewing areas to provide a safer space for visitors.
The province says it shared the planned upgrades with key local stakeholders in the Whiteshell area, and the trail will remain closed until the safety measures are installed.
“These safety measures will help ensure no other family has to suffer a tragic loss,” said Moyes, adding the province is also reviewing whether additional safety measures are needed at other locations in provincial parks.
