After a successful start to the second half of the season, the University of Manitoba Bison men’s basketball team returns home to host their fellow rivals from the Prairies.
The Bisons (6-4) welcome the Regina Cougars (3-6) on Friday and Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre at 8 p.m. Manitoba is currently battling for a top spot in the East Division after coming off a four-game conference winning streak and becoming tied for a second place record.
“I think our consistency is a little bit better,” head coach Kirby Schepp said when asked to compare last season. “(The) guys are a year older and a little bit more experienced. I think they just know what it takes day in and day out to keep themselves playing at a high level. We’ve brought in a lot of guys who really were foreign to CIS basketball and really didn’t understand what it took, but slowly as we developed the culture that changed a little bit.”
Depending how this weekend goes, the Bisons could be looking at a six-game win streak by Saturday.
Coach Schepp said his team didn’t necessarily set their sights on a playoff spot, but rather a CanWest Final Four position, which he thinks is still within reach.
Before the men take to the court, the women’s team will play Regina at 6 p.m. both nights.
