An independently-produced contest for local musicians will air nationwide tonight, giving artists facetime from coast-to-coast.

Manitoba Songfest 2012 was created by second-year students in the Creative Communications program at Red River College in partnership with Shaw TV.

Six original songs will be performed, where musicians will compete for a chance to be profiled on Shaw and have their music put into heavy rotation on RRC’s campus radio station, 92.9 KICK-FM.

Garrick Kozier and Ashley Wiebe will host the broadcast, while Allison Marinelli will handle interview duties with artists throughout the show.

The music will be judged by five regional jury members to make up half of the result, while the other half will be based on a live televote from viewers. The jury includes staff from 99.9 BOB FM, 102.3 Clear FM, FAB 94.3, Hot 103, Power 97 and QX104 FM, as well as music journalists and editors from the Winnipeg Free Press and Uptown Magazine.

Manitoba Songfest 2012 will air at 7 p.m. tonight on Shaw TV, as well as on WCGtv across Canada and on Shaw Direct TV (channel 299).
