WINNIPEG — It will be a sticky and muggy one out there this weekend in southern Manitoba.
The City of Winnipeg is inviting residents to beat the heat by cooling off in civic facilities as temperatures reach the mid-30s over the next few days.
City pools and spray pads are an easy and quick way to cool down, or the public can attend any of the city’s leisure centres and libraries during regular operating hours.
Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Winnipeg on Friday, saying, “Persons in or near this area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions.”
Humidex values will bring temperatures closer to feeling like the 40s until at least early next week.
Manitoba Health says people should stay hydrated and seek shade to reduce the risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses. In Quebec, health officials say at least 50 people are now believed to have died from such complications.
Residents are also reminded to never leave people or pets unattended in parked vehicles even for a few minutes, as temperatures can rise quickly and create a dangerous environment.
