Gimli RCMP chased a man onto Lake Winnipeg after he tried to evade a traffic stop in the community on January 1.

Police pulled the man over at around 12:30 p.m., but he fled his vehicle and ran onto the lake. They say the suspect tried to steal a truck parked near an ice-fishing shack, but was arrested before he could run any further.

Officers searched a backpack belonging to the man, which turned up a loaded sawed-off shotgun.

David Allan Parker, 36, of Winnipeg Beach was arrested and is facing several charges, including possession of a controlled substance.

Gimli RCMP continue to investigate.
