Police Watchdog Investigating After Man Receives Punches to the Face

The Independent Investigation Unit has been called in after an altercation between a man and an RCMP officer in Thompson, Manitoba.

Two officers responded to a call on September 12 about an intoxicated female. Once police arrived, an altercation began between one of the officers and a bystander, in which the man was punched several times in the face.

One Worker Dead After Being Trapped in Derailed Train in Manitoba

THOMPSON, Man. – One of the two workers who were extricated from a train that derailed south of Thompson, Man., has died.

The Arctic Gateway Group, which recently purchased the Hudson Bay Railway, says in a statement that authorities have confirmed the death, adding that a second employee has sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital.

WINNIPEG – Manitoba RCMP have called in outside investigators to probe historical alleged assaults linked to hydro projects in the province’s north, but First Nations leaders say the government should still commit to an inquiry.

A report released last month by the province’s Clean Environment Commission — an arm’s-length review agency — outlined discrimination and sexual abuse at the Crown utility’s work sites in the 1960s and 1970s. The report said the arrival of a largely male construction workforce led to the sexual abuse of Indigenous women and some alleged their complaints to RCMP were ignored.

The man was travelling on Provincial Road 336 on August 31, about one kilometre north of Highway 23, when the vehicle lost control on the gravel and rolled several times.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in two separate crashes that killed two people on Manitoba roads this long weekend.

A 31-year-old woman died Friday morning when the pickup truck she was riding in lost control, hit the ditch and then struck a large tree on Sturgeon Landing Road, 15 kilometres west of Highway 10.
