Winnipeg Woman Charged in Fraud in Excess of $1M

Winnipeg Police Logo CrestA Winnipeg woman has been charged after allegedly bilking more than $1 million from the organization where she was employed in the finance department.

Police say were made aware of financial irregularities at Shawenim Abinoojii, an agency that provides foster care, support worker services and programming for children and families in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba.

Investigators began looking into the fraud in April 2019 and discovered a series of fraudulent transactions dating back to March 2016.

The transactions included:

  • Fraudulent cheques totalling $743,110
  • Fraudulent payroll transactions totalling $222,432
  • Unauthorized credit card charges and cash advances totalling $42,000

Police say the total amount of fraudulent transactions was approximately $1,007,000.

Gwendolen Joyce Reid, 46, of Winnipeg faces several fraud-related charges.

She was released on a promise to appear.

Reid was formerly an employee at Shawenim Abinoojii.
