WINNIPEG — Starting next week, St. Boniface Hospital will honour organ donors with the Gift of Life flag, expanding the recognition program that began at HSC Winnipeg in 2016.
The new flagpole at St. Boniface, supported by the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, will fly the flag at the main entrance on Taché Avenue beginning September 23.
The Gift of Life flag program has commemorated more than 270 organ donation instances across Manitoba, celebrating the generosity and courage of donors. Each flag-raising serves as a community tribute to the life-saving choices made by donors and their families.
“To be able to expand this gesture of recognition is really beautiful,” said Dr. Owen Mooney, Gift of Life medical director, who is also the medical director of the intensive care medicine surgery unit at St. Boniface Hospital. “Acknowledging the decision to say yes to organ donation at both HSC Winnipeg and St. Boniface Hospital is a way of further honouring a gift so selflessly offered.”
The flag will be raised on the Monday following each donation opportunity, and will fly for two days. It will be displayed regardless of the donation location, continuing the tradition of honouring donors across the province.
