Winnipeg police have charged a man after an assault in the West Alexander neighbourhood last Saturday.

Police were patrolling the area at around 8 p.m. when they saw two men fighting, one of which was armed with a large edged weapon.

Officers arrested the man holding the weapon, when it was learned he was an employee of a nearby business in the 600 block of William Avenue. Police say the suspect confronted the other man, who allegedly stole merchandise from the business. The suspect then armed himself with the weapon and a physical altercation ensued.
