UPDATE: Friday, October 25 — RCMP have confirmed that the eastbound car, being driven by the 25-year-old man, had crossed over the centre line and side-swiped the eastbound SUV, being driven by the 59-year-old man. The mechanical condition of the car wasn’t a factor in the collision. RCMP continue to investigate.
Original story below:
A crash east of Winnipeg early Wednesday left one person dead and two others injured after a vehicle’s tire fell off.
Manitoba RCMP responded to a three-vehicle crash on Highway 1 near Provincial Road 206 at around 12:30 a.m.
Police say a car and an SUV were travelling eastbound side-by-side when a mechanical failure caused the car’s passenger-side tire and other parts to dislodge, striking the SUV. The car caught fire after coming to rest on the highway. The 25-year-old male driver from Calgary escaped with non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
The SUV veered off the road and rolled into the ditch. The 59-year-old Steinbach man driving the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A 45-year-old male passenger, from the RM of Hanover, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized.
A third vehicle struck debris from the initial collision, rendering it inoperable. The 28-year-old Kenora woman behind the wheel was treated for minor injuries at the hospital.
RCMP continue to investigate.
