Winnipeg Sea Bears centre and captain Chad Posthumus has passed away following complications from surgery after suffering a brain aneurysm.

Posthumus, 33, collapsed during a training session on November 9 and underwent emergency surgery, but his condition became critical. He died on Wednesday.

“We are saddened to announce that Chad has passed away following a catastrophic stroke as the result of surgical complications,” the Posthumus family said in a statement. “We thank you for all of the support and prayers we received through this difficult time. We love you, Chad.”

“Chad fought hard but was unable to recover. Chad was and will always remain the face of our team,” the Sea Bears said.

A Winnipeg native, Posthumus was known for his leadership on and off the court, with a career that included stints in Canada and internationally. Tributes from the basketball community continue to pour in.

“Chad was a founding player in our league, helping lead Saskatchewan to the inaugural CEBL championship in 2019,” the Canadian Elite Basketball League said in a statement.

“He was a fan favourite in ensuing years playing with Ottawa and Winnipeg and representing Edmonton and Brampton in international tournaments.”

Posthumus signed with Winnipeg in 2023 and was instantly a fan favourite for his prowess on the court and towering 6’10” presence. He re-signed with the Sea Bears in February of this year.

The Posthumus family has asked the public in lieu of flowers to consider a donation to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

A book of condolences is available on the Sea Bears’ website. Memorial service details will follow.
