Winnipeg’s D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre (A.R.C.) is grappling with the effects of the Canada Post mail backlog, which threatens to disrupt its crucial year-end fundraising efforts.
The shelter, which has cared for Manitoba’s stray, abused, and neglected cats and dogs for nearly 25 years, relies heavily on donations during the holiday season to sustain operations.
With Canada Post workers now back on the job, CEO and founder D’Arcy Johnston remains concerned that mailed cheques may not arrive before the December 31 deadline for 2024 tax receipts.
“Many of our donors are not comfortable donating online and rely on Canada Post to send their contributions,” said Johnston. “This uncertainty could significantly impact our ability to fund operations in 2025.”
The challenge is compounded by Winnipeg’s harsh winter conditions, which make it difficult for some donors to deliver contributions in person.
To ensure donations reach the shelter in time, Johnston has offered a personal solution.
“I will personally drive to any location within Winnipeg to pick up donations if you’re unable to drop them off yourself,” he said, encouraging supporters to call the shelter to make arrangements.
D’Arcy’s A.R.C. is also urging donors to consider making online contributions through their website or to drop off donations directly at the shelter, 730 Century St. B.
