Winnipeg firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in a single-family home’s garage in the South Pointe area on Saturday.

Crews arrived at the scene on Yorkvalley Way at around 11:45 a.m. to find a vehicle ablaze inside the attached garage. Firefighters from the new WFPS station in Waverley West responded, containing the fire to the vehicle, and preventing it from spreading to the home. The fire was under control by 12:13 p.m.

All residents had safely evacuated before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.

Preliminary findings indicate the fire was accidental, likely caused by a plugged-in block heater.

Officials are reminding residents to never plug in their vehicles inside an attached or detached garage, as a fire can start in the garage and quickly spread to other structures or your home.
