Winnipeg Police and Manitoba Public Insurance have launched a new #DontDriveHigh campaign, aimed at drug-impaired driving enforcement in Winnipeg.
The operation will run from January through March and focuses on drivers under the influence of cannabis and other substances.
Police ran a similar campaign in early 2024, which stopped 243 vehicles and caught 64 drivers out of 148 who provided positive oral fluid tests. A total of 36 tickets were also issued, including for unlawful storage of cannabis in a vehicle and consuming cannabis in a vehicle.
“Although alcohol impairment continues to be the leading cause of impaired driving offences, cannabis impairment ranks as the second highest contributor,” police said in a release.
“This behaviour has the potential to lead to tragic outcomes, compromising the safety of all users of our roadways. We have taken notice and are taking action.”
Police warn the public that if you consume edible cannabis products, you shouldn’t drive for at least 12 hours.
