Winnipeg police arrested a 46-year-old man following a random assault on a woman in the city’s downtown on Friday.
Officers responded to a report of an attack near the 100 block of Rupert Avenue just before noon. A 34-year-old woman had been walking when a man approached and physically assaulted her, knocking her to the ground. Bystanders intervened, helping the victim into a vehicle for safety.
The suspect then continued towards Logan Avenue and Princess Street, where he allegedly kicked the driver-side door of a 2025 Porsche Macan causing approximately $1,000 in damage. Police also allege the suspect attempted to assault other pedestrians before several bystanders detained him near Princess Street and Rupert Avenue until police arrived.
The victim was not injured and did not require medical attention. Police say that she and the suspect were not known to each other.
Michael Andrew Lachance, 46, of Winnipeg, was arrested and charged with assault, mischief under $5,000, and failing to comply with a probation order. He remains in custody.
