Manitoba has called a byelection in Winnipeg’s Transcona constituency to replace a former MLA who passed away last month.
Nello Altomare, the NDP’s former education minister, died on January 14 after a battle with cancer.
Altomare, who was 61, worked as a school principal before being elected in 2019 to represent Transcona for the New Democrats in the legislature.
He was appointed to cabinet after the NDP won the 2023 election.
The provincial NDP has nominated lifelong Transcona resident and educator Shannon Corbett in the riding. The 53-year-old is the vice-principal at Transcona Collegiate.
The Progressive Conservatives and Liberals haven’t yet named candidates in the byelection.
The chief electoral officer will be issuing details in the coming days indicating polling times, locations and the dates and locations of advance polls.
The province says there are currently 33 NDP seats, 21 Progressive Conservatives, one Liberal, one Independent member and one vacant seat.
Transcona voters will head to the polls on March 18. Advance polls open on March 8.
