As new U.S. tariffs take effect, the City of Winnipeg is implementing measures to assess and mitigate their impact on municipal operations and capital projects.
While Winnipeg’s diversified economy faces less exposure than other Canadian cities, certain projects and procurement areas could see cost increases.
“The city is committed to ensuring taxpayers get the best value for their dollar, and that means working together with all levels of government and industry partners to navigate these new tariffs,” said Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham.
“A ‘Team Canada’ approach is essential to protecting jobs and investments in Winnipeg and across the country.”
Key steps being taken include:
- Coordinating procurement strategies with provincial and federal governments.
- Tracking U.S. purchases to better understand cost implications.
- Updating contracts to encourage alternative sourcing of materials.
- Providing regular reports on tariff impacts to the Standing Policy Committee on Finance and Economic Development.
U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico on Tuesday.
The president’s executive order hit Canada and Mexico with 25 percent across-the-board tariffs, with a lower 10 percent levy on Canadian energy.
