A 20-year-old man is facing charges after Winnipeg police responded to a report of animal abuse in the city’s Central Park neighbourhood on Friday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Edmonton Street around 1:50 p.m. after a witness reported seeing a man violently yanking a dog’s leash while walking two dogs.

Police identified the suspect and tracked him to a nearby apartment building. Officers took the man into custody without incident just before 4 p.m., though police described him as uncooperative during the arrest.

Inside the apartment, officers located the two dogs and turned them over to Animal Services. No injuries were reported.

The man, who has not been named, has been charged with animal cruelty and failing to comply with a release order. He was released with conditions, including a ban on possessing animals.
