Frontline health-care workers are taking their frustrations to the picket line today outside Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home in Winnipeg.
The workers, represented by CUPE, are demanding fixes to what they say is a broken payroll system causing widespread issues.
They say Extendicare’s WorkDay payroll platform — introduced in spring 2023 — has led to ongoing pay errors, inaccurate sick day and leave calculations, and flawed seniority lists. CUPE Manitoba president Gina McKay says the problems have sparked over 40 formal grievances.
“Care workers shouldn’t have to be worried every two weeks if they are being paid correctly,” said McKay. “We are calling on Extendicare to fix the broken WorkDay payroll system immediately.”
CUPE says some grievances involve more than 100 workers missing retroactive payments. Similar issues have prompted protests at Extendicare-run homes in Ontario.
Extendicare is a private, for-profit long-term care operator.
