Assiniboine River (FILE)
The province has issued a flood watch for the Assiniboine River from Shellmouth to Brandon as snowmelt continues to fuel spring runoff in parts of Manitoba.
Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre says runoff is nearly complete in southern Manitoba, but warmer temperatures are now accelerating snowmelt in central, western, and northern regions.
While up to 15 mm of precipitation is expected over the next week, forecasters say it’s unlikely to significantly impact runoff levels. The flood watch on the Assiniboine remains in effect through the end of next week.
The Manitoba Emergency Management Organization is coordinating with local and Indigenous communities to support flood response efforts. Officials are reminding residents to avoid rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas due to safety risks posed by high water levels, cold temperatures, and debris.
