The Manitoba government is inviting Lake Winnipeg commercial fishers to attend the province’s first-ever Fishers Summit, aimed at shaping the future of the freshwater fishing industry.
Set for May 9 in Selkirk, the summit will bring together north and south basin fishers to discuss long-term sustainability and economic growth for the sector. The event builds on regional forums held in 2023 and marks a shift toward greater fisher involvement in industry decision-making.
“Our goal is to bring commercial fishers into the decision-making process and have a say in the future of their industry. We hope that fishers from across the province will attend this summit and share their vision of the future,” said Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures Minister Ian Bushie.
Commercial fishing contributes about $100 million annually to Manitoba. The industry is currently regulated through a system of licences, quotas, and seasonal restrictions to ensure long-term sustainability.
Fishers interested in attending the summit can email fish@gov.mb.ca to receive further details and formal invitations.
