FortWhyte Alive’s new Buffalo Crossing visitor centre is now open. (HANDOUT)
FortWhyte Alive officially opened its new Buffalo Crossing visitor centre on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in its $40-million Your True Nature capital campaign.
“After many years in the making, we’re proud to open this beautiful new space and share it with the community for the very first time,” said Liz Wilson, president and CEO of FortWhyte Alive.
“Rooted in FortWhyte’s values, the building is welcoming to all, built to the highest standards of sustainability and designed to foster connection with nature, each other and the ideas that shape a better future.”
The state-of-the-art facility is located at the organization’s new south entrance off McGillivray Boulevard just west of Costco in Winnipeg’s southwest.
Officials say the new building serves as both a physical and symbolic gateway — connecting people to nature through bold, climate-resilient design and inclusive public access. Built to meet the highest global energy efficiency standards, the centre is Manitoba’s first commercial building certified to both the Passive House and Zero-Carbon building standards.
Visitors who wish to travel to the new building by bus can now do so, with Winnipeg Transit announcing that bus service to FortWhyte Alive’s Buffalo Crossing is now available on routes 649 and 650.
As part of Earth Week celebrations, FortWhyte Alive is offering free admission to the new facility through April 27.
