A new documentary set to premiere next month is turning the spotlight on a bizarre true-crime story from the Canadian Prairies.
“The Sexiest Man in Winnipeg” follows the rise and fall of Steve Vogelsang, a former sports anchor and local celebrity who stunned the public when he was arrested for a string of unusual bank robberies in 2017.
The trailer for the film was released on Wednesday.
The film traces Vogelsang’s transformation from a charismatic TV personality on CKY (later CTV Winnipeg) and broadcast instructor at Red River College, to a fugitive on the run.
“Set against Winnipeg’s frozen streets and familiar faces, Vogelsang’s fall echoes like a news story you can’t quite forget,” said a Prime Video press release to promote the film. “As the case deepens, a more complex story emerges — one about identity, ego, and the slow unraveling of a man who once had it all.”
Like the story itself, the title of the documentary is equally as peculiar. Vogelsang was once named “The Sexiest Man in Winnipeg” by Uptown Magazine amid the peak of his public career.
Vogelsang was sentenced to a total of 6.5 years in prison for his crimes committed across Saskatchewan and Alberta. In April 2019, he received a five-year sentence for four robberies in Regina and Saskatoon. Later, in October 2019, he was handed an additional 18-month sentence for two robberies in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
The documentary will premiere on Prime Video on May 9 and is narrated and produced by Will Arnett.
