Elmwood–East Kildonan Councillor Jason Schreyer has died unexpectedly.
The City of Winnipeg revealed the news in a press release on Wednesday. Schreyer was 57.
“Beyond politics, Jason brought joy and creativity to those around him,” Mayor Scott Gillingham said in a statement.
“He had a love of music, often being the first to grab the mic at karaoke, delighting colleagues with performances at national conferences, sharing his talents in multiple languages at Folklorama, and even offering a song as a prayer at the start of council meetings.”
Details surrounding Schreyer’s sudden death aren’t yet known, but Gillingham said he was notified late Tuesday of the news.
Schreyer was first elected in 2014, earning a reputation as a strong and independent voice on council.
Known for championing affordability and food security, Schreyer was recently working on initiatives to ensure residents in his ward had access to essential resources. He came from a legacy of public service, as the son of former Manitoba Premier and Governor General Ed Schreyer.
Outside of politics, Schreyer was beloved for his vibrant personality and love of music, often singing at public events, including Folklorama and national conferences.
Schreyer is survived by his wife, two children, and his parents.
