A 46-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly abusing a dog and assaulting an off-duty Winnipeg police officer.
At around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, the officer witnessed the man assaulting a large-breed dog on Assiniboine Avenue near the Midtown Bridge. Several bystanders had gathered and were trying to intervene when the officer identified himself and attempted to make an arrest with the help of a witness.
Police say the suspect resisted, attempted to kick the officer, issued threats, and bit him in the upper body. On-duty officers arrived shortly after and took the man into custody, though he continued to resist arrest.
The suspect has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, resisting and obstructing a peace officer, and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. He was released on an undertaking.
The condition of the dog was not disclosed.
