The Manitoba Wildfire Service reports that wildfire danger remains high across most of the province, with extreme risk in the northwest.

Dry forest conditions, particularly in the southeast and northwest regions, have contributed to 93 wildfires so far this season, which the province says is well above the average of 75 for this time of year.

There are currently 17 active fires, including several significant blazes in the eastern region:

  • Fire EA057 near Carrick is being held at approximately 8,904 hectares.
  • Fire EA061, just one kilometre from Bird River, has grown to 121,750 hectares and remains out of control. PR 315 and PR 314 near Bissett are closed.
  • Fire EA062 near Lac du Bonnet is under control at 4,008 hectares.
  • Fire EA063, which crossed the Ontario border near Ingolf, is out of control on both sides, including 1,650 hectares in Manitoba.

Residents in eastern Manitoba are urged to stay alert and have an emergency “go kit” ready in case of evacuation.

Travel and fire restrictions remain in place, including a full burn ban in many areas and all provincial parks. Campfires, charcoal barbecues, fireworks, and sky lanterns are prohibited. Propane appliances are still allowed.

The state of local emergency in Nopiming, Wallace Lake, South Atikaki, and Manigotagan River parks has been extended until June 20.
