Manitoba’s first diesel-to-electric school bus conversion is now complete and operational, thanks to a collaborative project at RRC Polytech.
The initiative showcases a cost-effective method for electrifying existing school bus fleets, significantly reducing emissions and costs.
The project, funded by the Manitoba government and the Canadian Shield Foundation, involved RRC Polytech, Noble Northern, and the Seven Oaks School Division. A donated diesel bus was retrofitted with electric motors, batteries, and controllers by a team that included RRC students and industry experts.
According to RRC Polytech, the conversion kit could save over $100,000 compared to purchasing a new electric bus, with annual savings of up to $11,000 in fuel and a reduction of over 21 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
“This project is an example of the applied research expertise and facilities RRC Polytech has developed over the last 20 years that contribute to advancing technologies to support Manitoba’s energy transition,” said Fred Meier, president and CEO, RRC Polytech
Officials say the retrofit model not only supports cleaner transportation but also has the potential to create local jobs and stimulate Manitoba’s economy.
Next steps include exploring commercialization and scaling up the conversion process for broader adoption across school divisions.
