Winnipeg’s construction season seems to have been underway for a while now, but on Wednesday, the city officially kicked it off.
During a news conference near Pembina Highway and Abinojii Mikanah (formerly Bishop Grandin Boulevard), the city touted its $164.61 million budget for local and regional street improvements in 2025.
“We’re making record investments in road renewal over the next several years,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
“These upgrades will make it safer and smoother for people to get around, whether they’re driving, cycling, or walking. I want to thank Winnipeggers for their patience as this work gets done.”
The city says crews will work on nearly 150 lane kilometres of road, bridge, and active transportation infrastructure over the coming months.
One of those projects is where Gillingham spoke to reporters in south Winnipeg, where the Pembina Highway Overpass at Abinojii Mikanah is receiving a major overhaul to improve traffic flow. The area includes the busy Chancellor Drive intersection and the eastbound Pembina off-ramp near the north entrance to the University of Manitoba on University Crescent.
Other projects include:
- Inkster Boulevard – Aikins Street to Landsdowne Avenue (second year of two-year project)
- McGregor Street – McAdam Avenue to Church Avenue
- Westbound Abinojii Mikanah – St. Anne’s Road to River Road (second year of two-year project)
- Dugald Road – Plessis Road to Ravenhurst Street
- Pembina Highway Bridges over the La Salle River
Interim repairs will happen on the Louise Bridge through the early part of summer and on the Midtown Bridge at Donald Street in the fall.
The city says nearly all scheduled projects have been tendered and have either already started or will start shortly.
