The University of Manitoba has pulled the plug on the aging Joyce Fromson Pool after a serious leak forced an emergency closure earlier this spring.
Discovered on April 8, the leak prompted a full assessment of the 60-year-old facility, which concluded the pool had reached the end of its swim. The closure means all swim programming for spring and summer is officially sunk, affecting more than 7,000 users– including Mini U campers, swim lesson participants, and the university’s competitive swim teams.
“The university is actively exploring options for replacing the pool,” officials said in a statement. “We are also working on interim solutions to support ongoing training needs for our high-performance programs during this closure.”
Refunds and alternative programming options have been communicated to affected users. The university will share updates with the community as planning progresses.
