A head-on crash north of Swan River on July 1 has claimed the lives of three people and left another injured in hospital.

Manitoba RCMP say the collision happened around 3:30 p.m. on Highway 10 near Road 224 North. A southbound vehicle crossed the centre line and collided with a suspected stationary vehicle parked on the highway’s shoulder, causing it to roll into the ditch.

The occupants of the parked vehicle — a 42-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman — were taken to hospital, where both later died. The driver of the southbound vehicle, a 36-year-old man from Winnipeg, and his 29-year-old passenger from Swan River, were hospitalized with critical injuries. The 29-year-old later succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased in the northbound vehicle have been identified as Brendan Berg, the bassist for Winnipeg indie pop band Royal Canoe, and his partner, Olivia Michalczuk.

In a social media post, the band says Berg died a day before his 43rd birthday.

“We are all in a state of shock trying to process this tragic news, the band said. “Brendan was the kindest, sweetest man you could ever know, and his passing has left an enormous and sudden hole in the lives of everyone who knew him.”

RCMP continue to investigate.
