Winnipeg police are warning the public about a series of fraud and theft incidents believed to be linked to a travelling criminal group currently operating in the city.
Police say suspects are approaching people in public places, including at gas stations, banks, grocery stores, casinos, and mall parking lots, often during daylight hours. The suspects typically ask for directions or money for gas and offer fake gold jewellery or imitation electronics, such as iPhones, in return.
In some cases, victims have had their real jewellery stolen through distraction techniques, only realizing it was missing after the encounter.
Police say the suspects often travel in groups using vehicles with out-of-province licence plates and may be accompanied by children to lower suspicion.
Authorities are urging the public not to give money or accept items in these situations and to avoid engaging. Anyone with information or who has been a victim is asked to contact police at (204) 986-2426 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS.
