South Winnipeg now has its first regulation-size outdoor basketball court, which officially opened Saturday at Eaglewood Park.
The $275,000 project was jointly funded by the federal government, which contributed $213,000, and the City of Winnipeg, which provided $62,000. The city will also manage and maintain the facility.
Located in the city’s largest Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association catchment area, the court will allow the WMBA to host summer league games and tournaments in south Winnipeg for the first time. About 22 to 28 teams from the area register annually for the association’s leagues.
“Basketball continues to grow in popularity — especially now with the rise of the Canadian Elite Basketball League and our very own Winnipeg Sea Bears,” said Carrissa Reyes, vice-president of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association, in a release.
Eaglewood Park is located at 110 Eaglewood Road in the Prairie Pointe neighbourhood.
