The Manitoba government is warning residents about fraudulent text messages demanding fine payments or tax credit confirmations.
This week, Manitobans reported receiving texts claiming to be from Manitoba Justice, instructing them to pay outstanding fines such as speeding tickets. Officials stressed that Manitoba Justice does not send payment requests by text.
Others have received messages about finalizing their Homeowners Affordability Tax Credit (HATC) through a link. Manitoba Finance confirmed it does not verify or finalize tax credits via text.
Authorities advise recipients not to click links, respond, or share personal information. Suspicious texts can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
