The Manitoba government is moving ahead with plans for a new emergency department at Victoria Hospital in south Winnipeg.
The governing NDP campaigned on a promise to reopen the ER at the busy Pembina Highway hospital after it was closed under the previous Progressive Conservatives in 2017.
“Our commitment has always been to staff up the health-care system first and then move forward with a new emergency department for Victoria Hospital,” said Premier Wab Kinew on Friday.
“Today, two years after being given the honour of forming government, we are proud to say we’ve kept our word to Manitobans.”
The province says a tender will be awarded next month and construction is scheduled to start in January 2026.
Since October 2023, the province says it has added 3,397 net new health-care workers, including 285 physicians and more than 1,100 nurses. Victoria Hospital alone has gained 57 staff, according to the province.
The province also confirmed the return of the Mature Women’s Centre at Victoria Hospital.
