A former RCMP officer has been charged after an investigation into an allegation that money was stolen during a traffic stop in Portage la Prairie.

Const. Ben Harder was accused of taking about $300 from a vehicle during a stop on November 19, 2024. Manitoba RCMP investigated, interviewing the complainant and several witnesses, including fellow officers.

Harder resigned from the RCMP in January 2025 while the investigation was ongoing. On October 2, 2025, he was served a summons by Ontario Provincial Police and charged with breach of trust and theft under $5,000.

He is scheduled to appear in Portage la Prairie court on October 21. The Independent Investigation Unit monitored and reviewed the case.
