Free radon tests are available beginning today at all Winnipeg public libraries. (WINNIPEG.CA)
Winnipeg residents can now borrow free radon screening kits from any public library branch to mark November as National Radon Action Month.
Through a new partnership between Winnipeg Public Library and the Manitoba Lung Association, the initiative aims to make it easier for residents to test their homes for radon — a radioactive gas that occurs naturally and is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.
Because radon has no colour, smell, or taste, testing is the only way to detect it.
Radon screening kits will be available to borrow between November 1 and April 30 each year. With radon readings being less accurate in the summer months when people have windows and doors open more, kits will not be available to borrow between May 1 and October 31.
