A 32-year-old Winnipeg man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into a home in the RM of West St. Paul while dressed in fake police clothing.
Red River North RCMP were called to Nye Avenue around 2:45 a.m. on Friday, after a homeowner confronted an intruder inside her hallway. She fled with two children to a vehicle in the driveway and called police. The suspect, who claimed to be an officer, was wearing a jacket with RCMP-style embroidery, a baseball cap labelled “Police,” and carrying two duffel bags.
Manitoba RCMP and a drone operator were brought in to assist with the search. Officers located the suspect shortly afterward near the River Trail and arrested him without incident. No one in the home was physically injured, and nothing was stolen.
The man has been charged with breaking and entering and personating a peace officer. Investigators note the clothing seized is not part of any official RCMP or police-issued uniform.
RCMP remind the public that responding officers typically wear full uniform and encourage anyone unsure of an officer’s identity to request ID or call their local detachment’s non-emergency line.
The investigation is ongoing.
