Meteorologists are closely monitoring a powerful Alberta Clipper that could bring hazardous winter weather to Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba beginning Wednesday.
The system is expected to move into the region Wednesday morning and linger through Thursday evening. Forecasts call for widespread snowfall of 10 to 20 centimetres or more across south-central Manitoba, including Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, areas along the Trans-Canada Highway, and into the Whiteshell Provincial Park.
Strong northerly winds with gusts of 80 to 90 km/h or higher are also expected. Combined with falling snow, the winds could produce blizzard or near-blizzard conditions, particularly in open areas.
There is also a risk of freezing rain in southwestern Manitoba, with up to two millimetres of ice possible.
