An early-morning fire caused extensive damage to a vacant industrial building on Archibald Street on Thursday.
Winnipeg firefighters responded at about 3:36 a.m. to the 0–100 block of Archibald Street after on-duty police officers reported the fire. Crews encountered heavy smoke and flames upon arrival and were unable to enter the single-storey building due to the intensity of the fire.
Firefighters launched a defensive attack using aerial ladders and handlines. Crews also utilized a drone to provide aerial and thermal imaging to target hotspots and direct water streams.
The building sustained severe smoke, fire, and water damage. Due to structural concerns, an emergency demolition is being arranged.
No injuries were reported.
Archibald Street remains closed between Nairn Avenue and Mission Street. Officials say water from firefighting efforts may freeze, so city crews will monitor the area and apply sand and de-icing agents as needed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not yet available.
