Manitoba RCMP and the Royal Canadian Air Force safely rescued three people who became stranded while fishing on Lake Manitoba last week.
Mounties say the incident occurred the evening of January 9 near St. Ambroise, when a family member received a text message from the group requesting help getting home. The three individuals, ranging in age from nine to 60, had travelled several kilometres onto the lake using an enclosed Bombardier.
RCMP officers searched the area by snowmobile for several hours, assisted by a family member and the use of drones, but were initially unable to locate them. After a second request for help was received, police requested additional support from the Royal Canadian Air Force.
A Hercules aircraft from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron spotted the group at approximately 4:25 a.m. the next morning, about five kilometres from shore. Officers and a family member then reached the location by snowmobile.
Police say the group was low on fuel and had no firewood, but none were injured and medical attention was not required.
