A fire at a school in Berens River First Nation prompted community leaders to ask residents to remain indoors on Tuesday.
The kindergarten to Grade 9 school, part of Frontier School Division, became engulfed by flames just after 3 a.m., according to Manitoba RCMP.
“Please keep windows and doors closed or properly sealed to reduce exposure, as heavy smoke from the fire poses a serious health risk, particularly to Elders, children, and individuals with respiratory or other health conditions,” community leaders said in a social media post.
Mounties say a night guard observed the school filling up with smoke. The local fire department attempted to extinguish the fire in a crawl space, but it grew too big. Officials say emergency crews battled flames for roughly six hours, but were unable to save the school.
It’s unclear what started the blaze, but no injuries were reported. Police say the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner and RCMP continue to investigate.
“We will do everything in our power to rebuild. We will engage every available resource to bring a strong and timely solution to this tragedy,” said a statement from Berens River First Nation chief and council.
Berens River School was originally built in 1968 and was most recently attended by 380 students.
The community is located approximately 275 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
