Historic Winnipeg buildings are set to see new life with the addition of nearly 300 new downtown housing units.
CentreVenture Development Corporation announced plans Tuesday for the St. Charles Hotel and Maw’s Garage, along with other properties to help increase downtown living in Winnipeg.
Supported by $4.65 million from the City of Winnipeg, the federal Housing Accelerator Fund and the Gail Parvin Hammerquist Fund, 106 out of 297 units will be designated as affordable housing.
Since 2022, I have been clear that we need to turn vacant commercial space into housing to bring life back to our downtown,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
“Today, we are delivering on that commitment. These investments will turn vacant heritage buildings into hundreds of new homes, bringing the ‘feet on the street’ we need to revitalize our core.”
The new units will be created through four redevelopment projects:
- St. Charles Hotel, 235 Notre Dame Ave. — 140 units
- Maw’s Garage, 291 Bannatyne Ave. — 114 units
- 290 Garry St. — 29 units
- Alloway Lofts, 179 McDermot Ave. — 14 units
Construction timelines have not yet been announced.
