Manitoba RCMP have charged a Calgary man after a drone carrying a large quantity of drugs was intercepted near Stony Mountain Institution.
Police say they were notified by the correctional facility early last Sunday morning that a drone had dropped off a package suspected to contain drugs. Officers in the area then stopped a vehicle turning west on Road 72N from Highway 7 in the RM of Rockwood.
Inside the vehicle, officers found a black hard case labelled with a drone manufacturer’s name. A drone was also located at the feet of the male passenger, with a large package attached that could be released when triggered.
Police say the package contained balloons filled with drugs with an estimated institutional value of $600,000. Officers seized approximately 355 grams of methamphetamine, 63 grams of cocaine, 60 grams of tobacco and 59 grams of cannabis concentrate.
In a separate news release on Tuesday, the Correctional Service of Canada estimated the contraband drugs to be worth $751,400.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Winnipeg, was released without charges.
The passenger, David Mymin, 28, of Calgary, has been remanded in custody and charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
