Winnipeg police say two people are facing charges after flooding at their headquarters building downtown on Saturday.
According to police, the suspects deliberately opened emergency water supply valves in an adjoining office tower, causing extensive flooding to Winnipeg police offices at 245 Smith Street.
Police say the incident occurred at around 6 p.m. at the tower located at 266 Graham Avenue, impacting some working spaces within police headquarters. Initial reports suggested a possible watermain break or burst pipes, but investigators later determined the flooding was caused by valves being intentionally opened in upper-level stairwells.
Within minutes, water pressure forced water into stairwells and surrounding areas. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded and secured the compromised valves. Damage assessments are ongoing and expected to take time.
Police identified two suspects and located them in the 200 block of Graham Avenue just after 11 p.m.
A 51-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman have each been charged with six counts of mischief over $5,000. Both were released on undertakings.
