The provincial and federal governments are contributing a combined $15 million toward a new land development project at Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport.
Both levels of government announced $5 million from the province and $10 million from Ottawa for the West Lands development during a news conference on Friday.
“Strong supply chains depend on strong infrastructure,” said federal emergency management and community resilience minister Eleanor Olszewski, minister responsible for PrairiesCan.
“By expanding airside lands at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport, we are building on Manitoba’s strengths in aviation, aerospace and advanced manufacturing, attracting new investment, creating good jobs and helping ensure Canada remains competitive in a rapidly changing global economy.”
The investment will support civil infrastructure work on 84 acres of airport-adjacent land, including the extension of Moray Street, as well as drainage, grading and utility servicing to prepare the site for industrial development.
Once serviced, the land is expected to accommodate 1.25 million square feet of commercial space targeting aviation and aerospace, logistics and distribution, and manufacturing tenants.
The Winnipeg Airports Authority is also contributing $17 million toward Phase 1 of the project, which comes with a price tag of $32 million.
According to WAA estimates, once fully developed and leased, Phase 1 could support more than 400 jobs, generate $77 million in annual GDP and bring in $3.9 million in property tax revenue each year.
