A seized firearm and bullet holes in a stop sign following gunfire in the RM of Cartier on March 1, 2026. (RCMP / CHRISD.CA COMPOSITION)
A 47-year-old man is facing firearms-related charges after reports of shots fired near an intersection in the RM of Cartier.
According to Manitoba RCMP, officers responded the afternoon of March 1 to Road 56 North at Highway 248 following a complaint of gunfire.
Police say a vehicle travelling south on Highway 248 saw another vehicle parked near the intersection with what appeared to be a barrel protruding from the driver’s side window. As the vehicle approached, the driver heard a bang and believed his vehicle had been struck.
Officers determined the suspect had been shooting at a stop sign, not the passing vehicle. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Swan Lake First Nation, was not injured and his truck was not damaged.
The suspect, who is from the RM of Cartier, was arrested and later released on conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 12 in Winnipeg.
