Safety improvements are on the way to Winnipeg’s Millennium Library following a death last year.
The city says a contract has been awarded to replace the guardrails on all floors above ground level at the library.
A 40-year-old man died by suicide last summer in an incident that temporarily closed the library to the public. Another person threatened suicide two weeks later at the facility, but was prevented from jumping by security.
The city will install new guardrails made from both tempered and laminated glass as well as aluminum.
The new guardrails on the second and third floors will be seven feet in height, with eight-foot guardrails on the fourth floor.
Installation is expected to take place later this spring and cost approximately $1.4 million.
